Pet subjects: My Siamese cat is collecting cuddly toys

Our three-year-old male neutered Siamese cat has been stealing small soft toys from our neighbours’ houses, amassing a dozen cuddly animals. We’ve managed to return most of them to their owners, but he still has one which he plays with, tossing it up and down, and carrying it around. Sometimes we find this toy placed carefully in his food or water bowl. What’s going on? JT, Somerset I’ve written before about cats gathering small objects like this: it’s thought to be a variation on hunting behaviour, with cats bringing “trophies” home to share with their den-mates. In this case, the fact that the toy is placed on his “dinner table” makes it even more directly comparable with hunting. Perhaps he is quietly surprised and disappointed that the toy isn’t edible. There’s probably a market for cat toys that can be opened by owners, stuffed with food, then closed with Velcro, so that cats can not only enjoy hunting them and bringing them home, but also opening them up for a meal. It’s easy to forget that under their fluff and charm, many pet cats have an alter ego that’s a mean-spirited, predatory carnivore. My vet has taken fur samples but has found no parasites or other causes. What could be the problem? LR, Devon Rabbits can suffer from a condition called “telogen effluvium” after a stressful event (such as moving home). The hair follicles stop growing and enter into the telogen (resting) phase. Old hair falls out, and new hair does not grow in to replace it, resulting in bald areas. This is common in rabbits, and usually happens within six months of a stressful event. You’ve done the right thing to rule out infectious causes. A skin biopsy would be needed to confirm the diagnosis but this is often not necessary when it’s strongly suggested by an obvious stressful event, as in your case. It’s likely that the fur will grow back normally over the next six months. My two-year-old female wire-haired dachshund often rolls in fox droppings when we are out walking, and always when I am not watching her. Why does she do this, and how I can prevent it from happening? PG, by email Muck-rolling is one of the great mysteries of dog behaviour. I’ve heard two theories: first, the smell of other animals may disguise the dog’s own smell, which can help when they are hunting prey or if they are fleeing from a larger predator. Second, the new smell may give a dog some sort of kudos within the dog pack. My own view is that dogs can be driven almost ecstatic by certain scents for reasons that we’ll never fully understand. Rolling in fox droppings may be a magnified equivalent of a human inhaling deeply in a chocolate factory or a bakery. You will never stop your dog from wanting to do this: either exercise her in areas free from fox droppings or keep her on a long leash to retain strict control of her. My grandfather took on a female kitten who is now about seven weeks old. There is a male cat across the road who strays across from time to time. Grandfather is worried about this and wants to get the kitten neutered. When would be the best time to do this? Some people say that we should let them have one litter first and then get them neutered, but what do you think? ZR, by email There is no need to let her have kittens: there are already too many unwanted cats, and it will not benefit her at all to have a litter. Recommendations on the best age to spay cats have changed in recent years, with many vets now suggesting that it should be done at around four to five months of age, before the cat has a chance to come into season. Some animal rescue groups even spay kittens as young as 10 to 12 weeks, before they go to their new homes. Feral kittens are spayed as early as seven to eight weeks of age without any visible adverse effects. It’s best to phone your local vet to find out what they normally recommend, as vets do have different views on this subject.
